A Slip in the Wrong Place Is a Specification Failure
In a dry office, slip resistance is barely noticed. In a commercial kitchen, a washdown bay, a wet-process line or a loading ramp, it is the difference between a normal shift and an injury report. Once a floor gets wet or slopes, slip resistance stops being a finish preference and becomes a safety specification — measurable, ratable, and the responsibility of whoever specified the floor.
Anti-slip epoxy is how that responsibility is met. But “anti-slip” only means something if it is tied to a number, and that number comes from a recognised test.
How Slip Resistance Is Actually Measured
The honest way to specify slip resistance is by the ramp method now standardised in EN 16165 (Annex B), which classifies surfaces from R9 to R13. The higher the number, the steeper the wet, oiled ramp a person can walk on without slipping. It is not a marketing label — it is a tested classification, and it lets you match the floor to the hazard rather than hope.

We specify the target R-rating to your contaminants and your slope — water, oil, food fats and the gradient of the ramp all push the requirement up.
The Aggregate Is the Anti-Slip
The slip resistance does not come from the resin; it comes from a graded aggregate — aluminium oxide, silicon carbide or calibrated quartz — broadcast into the body coat at the density set by the target R-rating, then locked in by a seal coat that holds the profile without drowning the peaks. Too little aggregate and the floor never reaches its rating. Too coarse and it is uncomfortable underfoot and hard to clean. Getting this right is the craft of an anti-slip epoxy install.
It Still Sits Over a Tested Slab
An anti-slip floor obeys the same law as every other epoxy floor: it is only as good as the slab beneath it. In Ghana’s 81–83% humidity, we test in-situ RH to ASTM F2170 and moisture-vapour emission to ASTM F1869, prepare to an ICRI CSP profile, and prime to the reading before the body coat goes down. An anti-slip floor that blisters off a damp slab is not anti-slip — it is a trip hazard.
Maintaining the Rating
The aggregate profile that delivers the rating also traps soil, so an anti-slip floor needs a deck brush or scrubber rather than a flat mop — otherwise the profile silts up and the slip resistance you specified quietly disappears. We cover this in the Epoxy Floor Maintenance Guide.
Specify It Once, Correctly
If any part of your floor gets wet or slopes, tell us at survey stage so we specify the R-rating to the hazard. Under-specify and you have a liability; over-specify and you have a floor that is hard to clean. The right rating, matched to the contaminants and the slope, is the one that keeps people upright and the floor maintainable.
